Maddie Hinch MBE, Olympic Hockey Champion Visits School

On Monday 20 February 2017 we were delighted and honoured to welcome back Maddie Hinch, a former pupil of the British Section, SHAPE International School. She returned having established herself as an incredible hockey goalkeeper;  England’s Number 1, Team GB’s Number 1, European hockey champion and Olympic gold medallist. Many will have seen her heroics in the penalty shuffle which decided the final in Rio 2016.

BFBS News were delighted to attend and report on this inspirational and successful athlete.  To view, please click the following "Forces TV newsreport" link and scroll to the bottom of the page:

Maddie generously allowed all the pupils (and staff!) to hold her Olympic gold medal and even took part in a hockey competition with some of the pupils.  She also kindly signed autographs and had lunch with the Year 6 class.

Maddie explained that when she was younger, she was frequently told that she was too small and would not be able to make national selection. However, her determination and great character proved that it was possible to achieve her dream.

Throughout the day, Maddie emphasised the message that she was just like our pupils; she had been to SHAPE School and was part of a military family who had moved to many different locations. She encouraged everyone to aim high and to believe that anything is possible.

The children were inspired by Maddie’s visit, how she had shown great character and learning powers particularly “never give up, concentrate, keep on improving, enjoy learning” plus “be brave” and “be respectful”.

Since her visit,  it has been noticeable that there are many children playing hockey in their free time and during the day had  they are talking to each other about the importance of “being like Maddie and never giving up”.

We thank Maddie for her inspiring visit and wish her every continued success.
